Canyon View Elementary

Canyon View Elementary is an elementary school in the Catalina Foothills that’s widely regarded as one of the top elementary schools in the state. There are currently 386 students who attend this school, which allows for a somewhat low student/teacher ratio of 17:1. The test scores at this school are far above the state and national average with every subject. For instance, 76 percent of students at this school are proficient in English, which is far above the state average of 38 percent. When looking specifically at science, 91 percent of students are proficient in the subject, which is much higher than the 53 percent state average. Some of the special classes that are offered at Canyon View include ceramics, painting, sculpture, band, and video production. Their Project Based Learning initiatives in the classroom have received national recognition.

Manzanita Elementary

Manzanita Elementary is another fantastic elementary school within the Catalina Foothills School District that’s known for providing students with all of the academic and educational tools that they need to progress to middle school and beyond. Just over 600 students attend this elementary school, which has allowed for a teacher/student ratio of around 19:1. Their testing scores are also much higher than the state averages.

A total of 66 percent of students are proficient in math compared to the 38 percent state average. The science scores are even more impressive since 93 percent of students at Manzanita Elementary are proficient in the subject. In comparison, the state average is around 53 percent. Every teacher who is hired at Manzanita Elementary has been certified, which means that you can be confident your child is being provided with an exemplary education. The school itself has received numerous awards and recognition over the years, the latest of which was being named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2012.

Sunrise Drive Elementary

Sunrise Drive Elementary is an elementary school in Tucson with a sterling reputation. They are known for providing students with a wide array of immersive educational programs that cover a litany of subjects. Likely the most notable program that they have on hand is the Chinese Immersion Program, which is offered to any student from grades K-5. This program follows a 50/50 immersion model where the students receive instruction in both Mandarin and English.

The test scores at this school are very similar to those found in other elementary schools within this district. Around 70 percent of students at Sunrise Drive Elementary are proficient in math, which towers above the 38 percent state average. The school serves exactly 560 students, which has allowed for a student/teacher ratio of 17:1. Among the numerous awards that the school has received throughout the years, the most notable occurred when Sunrise Drive held a science fair with 140 entries. Five of these entries actually won awards at the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation back in 2017.

Ventana Vista Elementary

Ventana Vista Elementary is a top elementary school in the Catalina Foothills that consists of 450 students and is available to children entering grades K-5. The student/teacher ratio at this school is 17:1, which is lower than the state average of 21:1. Given the fact that the student/teacher ratio is relatively low, you can be confident that your children will receive individualized attention throughout the school year. The test scores at Ventana Vista Elementary are well above the state average in science, math, and English.

When looking at the percentage of students at this school who are proficient in these subjects, the results are at least 31 percentage points higher in each of these subjects when compared to the state average. A couple of special programs that are offered to students at this school include after-school band for fifth graders and after-school orchestra for fourth and fifth graders. The school also provides a Spanish immersion program to students in all grades that allows the student to become proficient at the language before they reach middle school.

Esperero Canyon Middle

Esperero Canyon Middle is a middle school in Tucson that’s open to students between grades 6-8. At the moment, there are just under 600 students who attend this middle school, which allows for a student/teacher ratio of 18:1. In four primary subjects, the students at Esperero Canyon Middle are far more proficient than the state average. The most striking example of the fantastic test scores at this school is seen with Algebra I. Around 93 percent of students at Esperero Canyon Middle are proficient in this subject, which is much higher than the state average of 37 percent. These high test scores show that the teachers are properly preparing students for high school and beyond.

The teaching staff at this school is highly qualified, which is displayed by the presence of five educators who are National Board Certified. The science classes at this school are more comprehensive than most because of the location of the school. Because of the close proximity that the school has to the Coronado National Forest, the school has created innovative science partnerships throughout the years that provide numerous benefits to the students. Some of the most recent student awards include the Pima County Spelling Bee Champion in 2015 and 2017, the Arizona All-Around State Gymnastics Champion in 2015, and Science Olympiad Southern Regional Champions in 2017.

Orange Grove Middle

Orange Grove Middle is a middle school in Tucson that’s known for providing students with a learning environment that facilitates growth and development. There are currently 618 students who attend Orange Grove Middle, which has allowed for student/teacher ratio of 18:1. Like all schools within the Catalina Foothills School District, the test scores at Orange Grove Middle are exceedingly high across all subjects, which is most evident with Algebra I and science. Of the many students that enter the Algebra I program, over 98 percent are proficient in the subject, which is significantly higher than the 37 percent state average.

If your child is interested in learning more about STEM subjects, the Algebra I program at this school is a great place to start. The school itself was rated as one of the best schools in the country by Niche in 2017. They were also designated as a Kind Campus during the 2016-2017 school year. The teaching staff at Orange Grove Middle consists of some very experienced educators, which includes one staff member who received the Tucson Values Teachers Award for Excellence in Education and another staff member who was a state finalist in 2016 for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Catalina Foothills High

Catalina Foothills High is the sole high school within the Catalina Foothills School District. There are currently around 1,700 students who attend this high school, which allows for a student/teacher ratio of 20:1. The school has an exceedingly high graduation rate of 96 percent, which is much higher than the state average of 78 percent. Around 40 percent of students also participate in Advanced Placement classes, which is also significantly higher than the state average of 15 percent. Across six core subjects, the test scores at this high school are very high when compared to the state average. At least 67 percent of students are proficient in each subject, while 79 percent of students are proficient in Algebra I.

The advanced courses at this school mainly include AP math and AP science. However, students between grades 9-12 have the ability to enroll into such courses as Chinese language and culture, Calculus AB, European history, music theory, macroeconomics, and Spanish literature and culture. They have received many notable awards over the years because of the excellent educations that they provide to students. For instance, the school was recently named as an A+ School of Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation. They have also received a silver award for best high schools in the country by the U.S. News and World Report.
